CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The next few days are a blur of silvers, peonies, and magentas.

I was enjoying not holding so much responsibility in my hands for once even if it was a new sensation, but Evander asked me to help Meike plan the starfall gala.

“I don’t know the first thing about that. I’m afraid I’d just get in the way,” I’d told him sincerely.

“It will be a good opportunity for you to get to know one another. For me?” He’d asked genuinely.

Once he had said those words—for me?—there was no alternative. Though I wished very strongly to find any craving of defiance and rigidness to ward off Evander’s gentleness. And yet…

He was right. It has become an amazing opportunity to get to know Meike. Days spent trimming flower stems, curating meal courses, and of course the main event—well, there are worse ways to spend a day.

Meike is also great company. When we met before in the infirmary, she seemed more serious than she is now. It was probably my half-broken state and the subject matter of her late husband to blame. But speaking to her in such a light atmosphere, it makes her seem lighter too.

She’s definitely more serious when compared to the way Evander and I play off each other though. Her humor is different. She doesn’t smile as much when she pokes fun at me, but it’s easy to pick up on. Sometimes she breaks character and laughs so hard that it shatters through the whole room.

Even so, I hold my female friendships in such high regard that it’s like comparing apples to oranges. Not even in the same category.

Today we’re dousing the bouquets with the contents of tiny spell jars. Meike explains that during the event, they’ll open and miniature shooting stars will swarm all around the bouquets before floating up to the sky.

“Have you ever planned an event this grand?” she says, her accent thick with the history of her homeland. It’s warm and becoming more familiar with the passing days.

“Depends on what exactly this event entails,” I reply, prodding for more information.

“Evander did not tell you? I only assumed he had,” she inquires. I shake my head in reply.

“It’s amazing,” Meike exclaims and her eyes light up. “I had seen shooting stars before on earth, but they don’t nearly compare to the splendor of it all here in The Ether.”

“I saw the borealis with Evander in the tower. It was gorgeous,” I say, moving onto my next bouquet. Fantasizing about all the splendor, as Meike says.

This makes Meike grin. “Evander usually doesn’t allow company in his observatory, you know.”

I wave her off with an overdramatic movement of my hand.

“He’s just being kind since I’m on my deathbed,” I let out in a long sigh.

Meike rolls her eyes at me and I reiterate the fact with a scoff.

“If you say so, Mercy,” she says, still grinning. She continues, “All the heads of the other courts and their guests—the high lords and their families—will be at our gala. You
